Favorite Minneapolis Photography Locations

Location scouting is one of my favorite parts of being a photographer.  Going to a place and seeing it through the “lens” as it were, with a photographer’s eye is shear creativity for me.

Below are some of my pre-planned and scouted great spots, where I can tell you where to park, what facilities are there, where the sun will rise and set, and most importantly, what spots are perfect to capture a great photograph. Although I am always open to new locations, it’s wonderful to be able to have this knowledge of a favorite location.

Beard’s Plaisance

4525 Upton Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55410

One of Minneapolis oldest parks, this hilly, wooded, scenic riverside park offering a nature-themed playground, tennis courts & picnic sites with grills, overlooks Lake Harriet, in Linden Hills.  It also has this adorable tree with a perfect toddler sized sitting spot in it.  The park was named “The Beard Plaisance” for Henry Beard, one of three men who offered to donate their land on the shores of Lake Harriet for a park in 1884, and “Plaisance” a French term meaning “pleasure ground.”

Small free 2-hour parking lot of Lake Harriet Parkway, or on street parking at S Upton Ave & W 46th Street.

Thomas Beach

3751 West Bde Maka Ska Parkway, Minneapolis, MN 55410

Thomas Beach a sandy swimming beach and greenspace right off of West Bde Maka Ska Parkway (formerly Lake Calhoun) that overlooks the distant Minneapolis skyline.  This well-maintained Minneapolis park lets you get close to the water and enjoy the sand, or the luscious grass, reeds, benches, picnic tables.  You also can enjoy this urban park with limited mobility as it is handicap accessible and there are many great spots close to the parking area.  Both paid ($1.25/hour) and street parking are available, although is a popular spot on beautiful days, so can be scarce.

Lyndale Park Peace Garden

4124 Roseway Road, Minneapolis, MN 55409

Japanese inspired public art and winding walking trails make this a unique photography spot, along Bde Maka Ska in the Lyndale Neighborhood and right across the street from the Lyndale Park Rose Garden, which showcases 3,000 plants in 100 different varieties and a Florentine fountain.

Peak Display for flowers Time: April 15th through June 1st. Bloom period often begins in late-March until frost.

Guthrie Theater

818 South 2nd Street, Minneapolis, MN 55415

The Guthrie is my go-to location for a modern, high gloss look, with many indoor and outdoor options to explore together.

The Guthrie was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel, who shared his vision to reflect the history of the neighborhood in his design statement: “The Guthrie is coming to settle in the historic golden rectangle near the falls, next to the old mills, in the industrial quarter that invented Minneapolis. Thus two histories, two legends, meet.”

Open to the public year-round, the Guthrie houses three state-of-the-art stages, production facilities, classrooms, full-service restaurants and dramatic public lobbies.

Mill City Area

704 South 2nd St. Mpls, MN 55401

After meeting at the outdoor courtyard of Mill City Museum and capturing the historical brick and exposed metal look as the perfect background for your photos, we will explore the wooden boardwalk, the grassy hill that overlooks the Mississippi. Then depending on how much walking you are up to, we can explore the Mill Ruins, or walk onto the Stone Arch Bridge, from which we can look back and capture the skyline and Minneapolis cityscape. Many indoor and outdoor options to explore together.

Minneapolis Sculpture Garden

725 Vineland Pl, Minneapolis, MN 55403

Home to the iconic spoon and cherry, the wheelchair-accessible Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is a fun and interactive way to show your creativity.

We’ll meet at the Flatpak in the Garden, a one-room version of a larger prefabricated house. From there we will have fun exploring the art garden and capture photos as we go.

The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is free, requires no tickets for admission, and is open from 6 am to 12 midnight every day.

Great Locations Outside Minneapolis

Union Depot

214 4th Street East, Saint Paul, MN 55101

We will explore this blend of modernistic design and historic building structures together. Saint Paul’s Union Depot is a historic railroad station and intermodal transit hub in the Lowertown neighborhood of the city of Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States. Great for those who love history and cityscapes. With both indoor and outdoor photography options, this makes an ideal unpredictable weather (spring, winter and fall) location.
